Very few individuals have had as great an impact on the quality of life and overall wellbeing of our Capital City and region as the Honorable Peggy Grove.  As a lifelong historic preservationist, successful business owner, real estate owner, government leader (who has served on Harrisburg City Council and PA State Committee), civic volunteer and generous philanthropist, Peggy’s work has been and inspiration to many and a godsend to others

Raised under challenging circumstances in rural Nevada, Peggy Grove gained a lifelong appreciation for historic preservation at a young age, “My stepdad would take me at dawn to the local union hall to bid on demolition jobs so we could salvage building materials for out home,” Grove says.  “It took five years to complete.  I straightened many rusty nails and learned out to recycle just about everything.”

Over the years, Peggy acquired and rehabbed numerous commercial properties in the Harrisburg area, many of which she and her son Michael manage today.  In 1979, she renovated the vacant former Moose lodge in Midtown, converting it into an educational facility to house the Academy of Medical Arts and Business.  As a founder and owner of the Academy, which existed for 35 years, Peggy launched hundreds of careers, while channeling her growing success into the funding of scholarships at HACC, the Harrisburg and Reno NV high schools, Capital Area School for the Arts and SciTech High.

Serving on Harrisburg City Council from 1994-2002, she chaired committees on Public Works, Community & Economic Development, and Building & Housing Development, tirelessly working to improve lives and neighborhoods and community organizations.  Earlier, while living in Mechanicsburg, Peggy served on the borough’s landmarks and preservation committee. She also served on the Mechanicsburg Area School Board, and the Board of Cumberland-Perry Vo-tech School.

Accordingly, the Historic Association is pleased to bestow its highest honor this year on Peggy Grove in recognition of her 40-year career as a business owner in Harrisburg and here even longer record of civic and philanthropic contributions to a wide array of causes, not only in Harrisburg, but nationally and internationally.

The Hickock Mansion– 201 N. Front St., preserved by the PA Housing and Financing Agency as a signature part of its expanded headquarters campus at Front & Locust streets

The Former Parkin Grocery Store– 1200 N. 2nd St., preserved by WCI Partners, LP as part of a four-building project that included a total historic facade restoration
