Local Black History experts Calobe Jackson Jr., Barbara Barksdale, and Elizabeth Jefferies will present a program on Monday, February 23, tracing the evolution of Black History Month from its establishment in 1926 as “Negro History Week,” when Harrisburg was among the handful of communities nationwide that staged events that first year.
Harrisburg’s Negro History Week event in 1926 took place at the Second Baptist Church at 424 Forster Street. In addition to describing that program and its participants, the speakers will touch on milestones in local Black history through the decades, ending with a tribute to the 21st century contributions of the late Lenwood Sloan.
