The oldest part of this building dates between 1730-1750, starting as a log cabin. The original cabin was expanded over the years and sometime between 1800-1807 began to serve as tavern, it did so for more than a century, and was a key place for both travelers and locals to congregate and communicate. It became a private residence again in the mid 20th century. It was later vacant, and the current owner, West Hanover Township, had concerns about the structural stability and environmental issues of an old house. It was demolished in 2024.
Preservation Pennsylvania brought this building to HHA’s attention and we join them in bringing attention to this humble structure. Preservation Pennsylvania would like to see it repurposed as a local historic landmark, perhaps serving as a community center.
