Our 2009 Elegant Progressions was a great success. It featured three "Spectacular McCormick Mansions
on Both Shores"
A partnership project of Historic Harrisburg Association and The Kidney Foundation of Central Pennsylvania, Elegant Progressions is a unique event hosted annually the first weekend in December in three spectacular homes.
In 2009 we visited the spectacular homes of several generations of Harrisburg's legendary McCormick family, whose grand style of living included Front Street mansions in winter and picturesque West Shore estates in summer.
The lifestyle of the McCormicks was elegant, expansive, hospitable and public spirited. The homes included:
Stop One: Hors d'Oeuvres The James McCormick Mansion, 101 N. Front Street, Harrisburg.
Early Second-Empire four-story cut-stone mansion, built by the founder of Dauphin Deposit Bank and the residence of his heirs and subsequent generations of this banking dynasty until 1948.
Stop Two: Formal Dinner "Cedar Cliff," The Olmsted-McCormick summer estate, 1713 Olmsted Way, Camp Hill
The summer residence of Gertrude and Vance McCormick, Mayor of Harrisburg during the early 20th Century "City Beautiful" era, featuring architectural design by the celebrated Philadelphia architect Paul Cret.
Stop Three: Dessert Buffet The Henry B. McCormick summer retreat, Cona Road, Bowmansdale
Built in 1903 in the early Frank Lloyd Wright "Prairie Style" of architecture, McCormick's "lodge" is perched on a broad forested bluff overlooking the Yellow Breeches Creek.
Launched in 1992, this black-tie fundraiser has been acclaimed for its innovation and efficiency in fundraising, and is considered to be the grand social event of the year. The event has sold out nearly each year since its inception. Elegant Progressions invites inquiries from prospective Sponsor attendees regarding priority reservations and seating.
